The company

The Hustle is a fast-growing digital media company that provides smart business insights and analysis to an entrepreneurial-minded audience. We have over 1.6 million subscribers to our newsletter, The Daily, and over 16,000 members in our entrepreneurial and start-up community, Trends.

We are a subsidiary of HubSpot, a fast-growing software maker that helps companies build and scale their businesses.

The role

As a member of The Hustle team, you'll be responsible for helping to lead our paid advertising efforts to make The Hustle the premier business & tech newsletter out there.

You will work across a wide swath of channels and be empowered to prospect new opportunities for growth, test them, and make decisions on if and how to scale.

The ideal candidate is a self-starter who knows how to use data to make the right decisions. We’re looking for someone who can dependably support the initiatives we’ve already built out, and bring good ideas for what’s next to the table. In addition, this candidate will have a hands-on attitude and analytical mindset with direct experience in executing paid advertising campaigns such as Facebook Ads, Google Ads, and more.

We encourage applications from candidates who thrive in small teams and we welcome candidates from non-traditional backgrounds and with different levels of experience.

A bit more context

You may be thinking…is this role managing paid ads for HubSpot, or The Hustle newsletter? Good question.

  • As you may know, HubSpot is best known for it’s B2B software. Marketing automation, CRM, customer support software, and more.
  • But, HubSpot also has a media team that gets more traffic than many publications you may be familiar with including HBR, Fast Company, and Entrepreneur.com (source: similar web).
  • In order to grow our in-house media network, we run paid ads. The campaigns are centered around acquiring YouTube subscribers, podcast subscribers, blog subscribers, and that includes subsidiaries like The Hustle which will be the focus of this role. In the future, it will likely expand to additional properties, including HubSpot branded properties.

In this role, you’ll get to:

  • Plan, execute, and report on all self-serve digital ad campaigns (i.e. paid social, paid search, review sites, etc.).
  • Expand our influencer marketing program’s reach & capabilities.
  • Brainstorm and implement new and innovative experiments for ad creative, audiences, landing pages, devices, new channels and more.
  • Manage an agency to help with niche co-reg & affiliate partnerships.
  • Work alongside account teams at Facebook, Google, etc. to brainstorm & implement experiments, and stay up to date on each channel’s best practices.
  • Track and optimize campaign impact, profitability & ROI across several of HubSpot’s regions.
  • Manage budgets and pacing to ensure spend limits come in on target.
  • Assist your team in building out new reports & dashboards.
  • Strategize and work cross-departmentally with design, copy, and video teams to create campaign assets such as ads, landing pages, and promotional videos.
  • Stay current on the latest in ad technology. Investigate and experiment with new marketing channels such as podcasts, review sites, newsletters, and more.

We’re looking for people who have:

  • 2+ years of direct response paid advertising experience.
  • Hands-on experience working with ad platforms (Facebook, Google, LinkedIn, etc.) to launch and optimize campaigns.
  • Comfortable with ambiguity and being part of a growing team.
  • Experience juggling multiple company-wide goals and working with multiple teams at once.
  • Capable of identifying what’s worked well in the past and iterating, but also comfortable ideating and implementing brand new ideas from scratch.
  • Advanced abilities in Microsoft Excel. VBA not required.

Bonus Qualifications

  • Experience with HubSpot
  • Experience working on paid advertising specifically for a media network/publisher (even if it’s housed within a non-company such as HubSpot rather than media company such as AT&T).
  • Has experience with a subscription product, double bonus points if that experience is in SaaS.

We know the confidence gap and imposter syndrome can get in the way of meeting spectacular candidates, so please don’t hesitate to apply — we’d love to hear from you.
